- Decrease the risk of dental trauma (accidental chipped, broken or lost teeth)
- Correct jaw relationships and reduce stress on the facial muscles and jaw joints TMJ
Step #1 Initial Consultation
At your first visit we will listen to your concerns to understand what you want to achieve with orthodontic treatment.
Then a thorough examination will be done to determine the nature of your orthodontic problem and what can be done to correct it.
After the examination we will discuss our findings and recommend the best options to correct the problem.
We will then discuss the process, costs, how long treatment will take and encourage you to ask as many questions as you need.
No referral is necessary to book your initial consultation.
Step #2 Orthodontic Records and Treatment Plan
If it is determined that orthodontic treatment is necessary, arrangements will then be made to take pre-treatment diagnostic records
3D digital scans of your teeth, photographs & X-rays
These records provide essential information for diagnosis and treatment planning.
Often we will discuss the findings at this appointment or for more complex cases a subsequent consultation appointment will be arranged to discuss the findings of these records, present a detailed treatment plan and outline the financial aspects of the proposed treatment.
Step #3 Get Your Braces On
Getting your braces on is gentle and painless. Your orthodontist will glue the tiny brackets onto each tooth and then place a wire to start gently straightening your teeth.
This process typically takes only 40 to 60 mins.
The majority of patients experience slight pressure or discomfort for about two or three days after their braces are first fitted.
For some people the first few days your teeth will feel a little tender and we recommend you eat softer foods.
Types of Braces
Traditional Braces - Stainless Steel
Stainless Steel brackets are the traditional braces people think of when you talk about braces. At Gentle Braces we use premium 3M mini-twin brackets that are typically smaller than most bracket systems. These tiny brackets are placed on the teeth and by using a series of wires we gently move your teeth into place.
Metal braces can be made fun with colours modules applied to each bracket. Perfect for young teenagers, they can match their favorite team, have Christmas or school house colours. Let your imagination run wild!
Stainless Steel braces are the most cost effective option and suitable for treating most orthodontic conditions.
Clear Braces - Ceramic Brackets
These are made of ceramic and almost disappear in some cases into the teeth. They allow correction of the bite, straightening of the teeth and 3D control of all teeth.
Our 3M Clarity Brackets blend with the colour of your teeth and will resist staining and discolouration throughout your treatment.
Clear braces are wonderful for adults or the older teenager that want a more discreet way to straighten their smile.
Hidden - Lingual Braces
If you have considered getting braces as an adult, we have a much more discreet option. These are known as invisible or lingual braces. These are placed behind your teeth and this way, no one – not even your best friend – will know you’re having orthodontic treatment!
One of the best aspects of invisible braces is, no matter how complex your bite or crowding is, these braces are able to do exactly what visible braces can do. These particular braces are placed behind your teeth, rather than on the front.
Incognito braces are 100% customised with robotically bent wires, which means they are absolutely unique to every individual when they are fitted.
Clear Aligners - Invisalign
Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are custom-fitted and are robotically made to fit you perfectly. The virtually invisible aligners gently reposition your teeth into a smile you’ll be proud of.
Invisalign is comfortable, can be removed to eat and is easy to clean. It can be used on all cases; however, for more complex bites, braces may need to be used in conjunction with Invisalign to get the ideal outcome.
The aligners are completely transparent which makes them especially popular among adults who would like a discreet treatment option.
In our practice, we use state of the art 3D digital scanning technology for the Invisalign appliance. There are no more messy impressions required for the aligners to be made. This scan is then sent to the USA where we treatment plan the case over several weeks before the aligners are custom-made and shipped back to us to be placed into your mouth. The specialist orthodontist overlooks all aspects of treatment with Invisalign.
Choosing a Specialist Orthodontist will have a huge impact on the result you will achieve with Invisalign.

Early Treatment With Plates
The majority of all orthodontic treatment can be undertaken once all of the baby teeth have been lost; however, there are certain circumstances where early treatment is required. Most early treatment involves widening the top jaw and possibly the lower jaw, and correcting crossbites or narrow arches.
Before undertaking treatment in younger patients, we will determine that there is a long-term benefit which minimises the need for any further orthodontic treatment later in life, or possibly even the need to remove adult teeth when the patient is older.
Early treatment may involve removable plates, plates that are glued in, anti-thumb-sucking appliances and possibly the use of partial braces if needed to align the front teeth. Our Specialist Orthodontists will advise you if early treatment is required.
How to Look After Your Braces
Brushing your teeth is just as important, if not more, when you are wearing braces. That’s because food can get stuck in the brackets and arch wires.

Foods to Avoid
You can eat most of the good things that you eat now. However, hard, sticky, crunchy foods should be avoided because they may stick to the brackets and pull them off your teeth. In addition, the sugar can get around behind the braces and cause cavities. Foods which should be avoided include :
- Minties and Toffee
- Caramels such as fantales
- Corn chips
- French bread sticks, bread crusts or hard rolls
- Whole apples or carrots (cut them into pieces first)
- Corn on the cob (cut the corn off the cob before eating)
