What to Expect with Rapid Maxillary Expansion Treatment

Rapid Maxillary Expansion (RME) is an orthodontic treatment used to gently widen
the upper jaw (also known as the maxilla).

RME treatment is commonly recommended to correct a
crossbite, treat a narrow palate, or create additional space for crowded teeth.
Expanding the upper jaw at the right stage of growth can also improve the way the
upper and lower teeth fit together.

What does an RME look like?

An RME appliance consists of a custom-made metal framework that fits securely
onto the upper back teeth. In the centre of the appliance is a small expansion screw
that is gradually adjusted over time. These gentle adjustments widen the upper jaw,
helping to create space for teeth and improve the overall bite.

What to Expect

It is normal to experience some pressure or tightness for a few minutes after each
adjustment. This feeling usually settles quickly as your mouth adapts.
During the first few days, you may notice changes to your:

Speech

Because the RME covers the roof of your mouth, it may temporarily affect your
speech. The more you speak, the faster you will adapt to it. Reading out loud,
singing in the car, or simply having a yarn with family and friends can help your
speech return to normal more quickly.

Eating

Eating may feel a little strange for the first few days after your RME is fitted. Cutting
food into smaller pieces and choosing softer foods can make eating more
comfortable while you adjust to the appliance.

Extra Saliva

It is common to produce more saliva when your RME is first fitted. This is a normal
response as your mouth adjusts to the new appliance. Saliva production usually
returns to normal within a few days to two weeks.
As the upper jaw expands, a gap may appear between your upper front teeth. This is
a normal and expected part of treatment and is a sign that the expansion is working.
The gap usually closes naturally as orthodontic treatment progresses.

Cleaning Your RME

Just as it is important to brush your teeth twice a day, it is also important to clean
your RME thoroughly twice a day to remove any food or plaque trapped around the
appliance.
When you are at school or work, rinse your mouth with water after meals to help
remove any food that may become caught in the RME.
Throughout treatment, avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods, as these can damage the
appliance.

It is also important to attend all scheduled orthodontic appointments so
your progress can be monitored.
If your appliance becomes loose or damaged, or if you experience significant or
persistent pain, please contact your orthodontist.
